Geography Graphing Lesson
Graphing
Lesson: 2nd Grade Geography Unit
Created by:
Stacy Walton
Lesson Objective:
The learner will identify continents and create a bar graph.
Materials: many sets of four pre-cut animals including kangaroo, armadillo, penguin and lion; 20
plastic bags, 20 sets of pre-cut continents including North America, Antarctica,
Australia and Africa; pre-made bar graphs with each of the four continents
written below each blank bar; assessment questions
Procedure: After the learner has discovered the seven continents and becomes familiar with each,
the learner will receive a bag full of pre-cut animals including kangaroos, armadillos, penguins and lions along with four continents (Australia, North America, Africa and Antarctica). The learner will then sort and identify which animals are found in which
continents. The learner will then make a graph with the four continents at the bottom of the page and place the
animals on top of each continent to represent a bar graph. After the bar graph is made the learner will transfer this information
over to a blank pre-made bar graph by shading in the bars up to the correct number of animals above each continent.
Assessment: After the learner has completed shading in the bar graph, he/she will then have to
answer four questions to assess his/her understanding.
Question 1: How many animals are on this graph?
Question 2: Which continent shows the maximum amount of animals?
Question 3: Which continent shows the minimum amount of animals?
Question 4. How many more animals does Australia have than the United States?
